Julatten in the tablelands makes a good base for birdwatching in Queensland's Wet Tropics. The tablelands are also known as the Atherton Tablelands and the Cairns Highlands.
There are only four roads to the tablelands, one from Innisfail, two from nearer to Cairns and the Rex Highway from the Captain Cook Highway near Mossman and Port Douglas. The most significant birdwatching destination here is Mount Lewis Road near Julatten.

If you are going to self catering accommodation in Julatten then Mossman offers a good opportunity to stock up; Woolworths, banks, newsagent, clothing, Chemist, dress shops, hairdressers, fuel, ice, gas, cafes, alcohol, PO, hospital and police station. The new Woolworths (2014) offers Free WiFi and has undercover parking.

MT Lewis Road is one of the more important places to visit for the wet tropic's endemics (altitude species) and Blue-faced Parrot-Finch. The part you need is called "the clearing" and it is about 11 kms from the main road. Two wheel drive cars have been driven there during the dry season. Turn off at the "Highlander" on the main road, continue past "Cobb's Cottage". The sealed part stops after 1.24 kms.

Other places to see
Abattoir Swamp, particularly the flowering plants at the carpark for honeyeaters.
Bicentenary Park, access from Mt Molloy downhill from PO to lagoon and forests.
Lake Mitchell, driving from Mt Molloy to Mareeba you will see the lake from the road. Find the causway road a little way along after first sighting the lake and go past the gate.
Wetherby Cattle Station water hole. Is on a public gravel road between Mt Molloy and Julatten next to the homestead.
